Wichita, Kansas native Thacker paints allegorical images that examine the weighty subject of the state of Black Americans using seemingly “sweet subjects”. In her first one-woman exhibition, Kijana Martin tackles the timely subject of African American women and their growing numbers in the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Using symbolic imagery, Martin explores issues around prevention, stigma and responsibility in her mixed media works.
