Vargas’s colorful and complex paintings are rooted in the symbols and history of his native Peru but also possess a chaotic, psychedelic sensibility derived from a painting technique the artist first began developing following hallucinations brought on by a spider bite. The title refers to two psychological states in which vague and random stimuli (often images or sounds) are infused with significant and even sacred meanings.
