The beloved Virgil Grotfeldt’s exhibition 274296 is the final body of work the artist created before his death on February 24, 2009. One of Houston’s leading artists, Grotfeldt, was assigned the patient number 274296 at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center during his battle with cancer. The eighteen oil paintings on view incorporate the MRI scans of Grotfeldt’s own brain. These beautiful paintings are a continuation of his works created on used found notebooks and papers.
