Creative Music Classes

Creative Music Classes:
fall session begins September 5th

Nameless Sound is committed to a vision of personal and community growth through creative music. The skills developed through musical improvisation emphasize listening, creativity, spontaneity, dialogue, and self-expression. In addition to bringing internationally acclaimed improvisors to Houston for concerts and workshops, Nameless Sound uses creative music every day as a tool to cultivate group awareness, self-awareness, empowerment, vulnerability, and diversity through a program of workshops and classes in area public schools and community centers. Nameless Sound offers two creative music ensembles for young people that meet weekly at MECA (Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts) at 1900 Kane Street in Houston's historic Sixth Ward.

The Nameless Sound Youth Ensemble for Adolescents and Young Adults meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 7 PM. Participants may come from any musical background, tradition, or skill level. The ability to read music is not a prerequisite. Visual artists, poets, actors, and practitioners of other artistic disciplines may take part if they have an interest in performance. Participants will have an opportunity to compose for the group or lead the group, and the 6-week session will culminate in a public performance.

The Creative Kids Ensemble for youngsters aged 5 through 13 meets on Wednesdays from 5 to 6pm to explore the joy of music making in a fun, positive, and affirming environment. Sound, rhythm, singing, drumming, and musical story-telling will be used to explore coordination, listening, leadership, creativity, group-awareness, and self-awareness. Children are encouraged to bring their own instruments if they wish, or instruments will be provided.

The summer session starts on Wednesday, September 5th. Both classes are held at MECA and taught by Nameless Sound Founding Director David Dove and Education Director Jason Jackson. All classes are offered free of charge. There is a flat $30 registration fee required by MECA. Plan to arrive early on the first day or contact MECA at 713-802-9370 to pay in advance.
