Hermeneutics is a series of oil paintings that explores the communication of complex socially constructed notions concerning human interaction and ideals.
Through manipulating a cache of iconography harvested from fine art and popular culture, and recontextualizing that imagery in fields inspired by contemporary information graphics, the work playfully highlights the ubiquity of persuasion in both its narrative and abstract forms.

Oculus is an edition of 12 lithographs based on drawing studies made by the artist Susan Doyle in preparation for her oil painting series Hermeneutics. Embracing the notion of a sampler, the plates were drawn using diverse mark-making techniques in order to re-interpret with stylistic affinity. Each lithograph was hand printed by the artist.
The series is presented in an archival box interleaved with rag vellum, faintly hotstamped with lyrics from an old American tune.
The full edition is limited to 25.
