Echo Gallery in Johnson City, Texas invites all artists residing in the United States to enter its juried art exhibition:
The Breast Show is certain to gain attention and be a little scandalous, at least in the US where a breastfeeding mother in public is sometimes prohibited and often met with disdain. The exhibition will be held in August in conjunction with National Breast Feeding Month, World Breastfeeding Week, and Black Breastfeeding Week. Our goal is to gain public attention and help normalize the female breast and promote breastfeeding. The exhibition will address the stigma that still surrounds breastfeeding in public, the work place, and within some cultures.
We also hope our exhibition will have a trickle down effect of helping to close gender gaps and promote equality. There have recently been a couple of female political candidates and a professional hockey player nursing their babies in ads/ photos that have gone viral along with a wonderful ad campaign the Gap did in March. Let's add to this progress! ( “Breasts are a scandal because they shatter the border between motherhood and sexuality.”
-Iris Marion Young, 1949-2006)
The art exhibition is open to all mediums and aesthetic directions. A percentage of the proceeds is going to Planned Parenthood and La Leche League organizations. Ginger Henry Geyer will be juror.
Dr. Mark Smith, co-founder of Flatbed Press in Austin and owner of Texas Arthouse Contemporary Gallery in Johnson City along with Texas public artist Deborah Mersky are assisting in the planning and execution of this exhibition.
