Artists and Educators: The Parish School, a school for children who have language and learning differences in West Houston, is seeking volunteers to help with its after school program, Adventure Playground. Adventure Playground is an outdoor classroom, where children build their own play environment out of found materials. Students, ages 6-12 work as a team, problem-solving, planning, and using trial and error, to realize their ideas.

Adventure Playground is modeled after like programs in Europe, but is the only of its kind specifically for children with language-based learning difficulties. As such, our classroom is exploratory, child-driven, process-oriented, but also focuses on communication, planning, social skills, other language-based goals.

We are seeking artists and educators who would like to experience a non-traditional, hands-on classroom and love the exploratory nature of working with children. Volunteering involves helping our students realize their ideas, but also getting messy, using tools, and being outdoors, rain or shine. If you have specific skills or research interests, we would love to work with you to explore them as well.

We are also seeking individuals who can schedule a weekly time, commit to a semester, and are over 18 years of age. We meet 3:00-6:00 Monday-Thursday, outside at the Parish School in West Houston: 11001 Hammerly, Houston, 77043.

If interested, please contact Jill Wood at jillwood(at)parishschool.org or 713-467-4696. To learn more about The Parish School: www.parishschool.org
