Purpose of Position Provide leadership and vision for internationally renowned collection of photography, with strengths in the history of photography (Gernsheim Collection), photojournalism, documentary photography, Texana, and literary iconography.
Essential Functions Serve as department head and supervise the Research Curator in Photography, the Associate Curator of Photography, and the Associate Curator of Art, in addition to several support staff; work in association with the Academic Curator of Photography.
Plan and prepare major exhibitions devoted to photographic materials, placing them in the context of other Ransom Center collections; prepare catalogs and programming associated with these exhibitions, working with exhibition staff, curators and librarians. Engage with scholars and support research and instruction in the photography collections; make presentations and write publications as necessary. Responsible for overall direction of acquisitions in photography; create policy documents; build relationships with collection donors, photographers, and dealers. Work closely with the development department to generate external resources for exhibitions, publications, and acquisitions projects, including the Friends of Photography. Work with public affairs and marketing departments. Work with the cataloging and conservation departments; provide leadership and coordinate curatorial activities for the Art collection. Serve on Ransom Center committees; represent the department at national and international professional meetings.
Required qualifications Masters degree in a field related to the collection. A minimum of five years of experience in museums or special collections libraries. Experience curating photographic materials. At least five years supervisory experience. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications Ph.D. in a field related to the collection. Ten or more years of experience in museums or special collections libraries. Superior, demonstrated record of publication, preferably in the history of photography.
Experience curating major exhibitions on photography, creating exhibition catalogs, and exhibition-related public programming. Knowledge of the trade in photographic materials. Extensive experience with development and donor relations. Experience with public relations and marketing of photographic collections. Superior written and oral communications skills. Professional demeanor. Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
