Join us as we launch the first print issue of Pastelegram!

Our premier issue features artist Barry Stone. The title, The sun had not risen yet / Now the sun had sunk, is drawn from two sentences from Virginia Woolf’s The Waves (1931), where Woolf’s complex narratives return again and again to descriptions of the sun’s movement

The circular structure of Woolf’s novel set the tone for Pastelegram’s first issue. For The sun had not risen yet / Now the sun had sunk, Stone assembled images within larger and smaller circuits. The pictures at the beginning are echoed by the end, while smaller cycles—of heavy metal images and fan letters, or pictures and texts concerning Stone’s interest in Pictorialist photography—also occur within the magazine.

Stone’s source materials include an excerpt from Sir Thomas More’s Utopia, an article by Maria Bustillos on David Foster Wallace’s library of self-help books, as well as an essay written by Bernard Yenelouis on the early abstract photographer Alvin Langdon Coburn.

We will see you at Domy Books-Austin on the 13th, Barry Stone will be present and the magazine will be hot off the presses!
