Communograph Artist Talk: Mel Chin
Communograph Artist Talk: Mel Chin
the NAME of the PLACE is I LIKE it like THAT: Maps in my Art
October 2, 3pm
This is the opening talk of Communograph: Mapping Through Creative Action series.
Houston native Mel Chin is an internationally known artist who explores the ways art can provoke greater social awareness and responsibility. Though classically trained, Chin’s art, which is both analytical and poetic, evades easy classification. Alchemy, botany, and ecology are a few of the disciplines that intersect in his work. He insinuates art into unlikely places, including destroyed homes, toxic landfills, and even popular television. Unconventional and politically engaged, his projects also challenge the idea of the artist as the exclusive creative force behind an artwork. Chin received a BA from Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1975, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1988 and 1990. He lives in North Carolina.
Communograph: Mapping Through Creative Action is a series of public programs co-curated by Bree Edwards, University of Houston Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts and Ashley Clemmer Hoffman, Project Row Houses, in conjunction with PRH’s Round 35 project Communograph, organized by artist Ashley Hunt.
