Moving on comes naturally to artist Perry House. He’s been doing exactly that, energetically exploring new territory, for a good long time. House was a pioneer of abstract painting in Houston when in 1985 his ground breaking work was recognized in the controversial landmark exhibit, Fresh Paint: The Houston School. Fast forward 26 years and you’ll find House still in Houston, still exploring new territory, and now tagged as a “heretic” with an “iconoclastic edge.”

Perry House: Movin’ On is the artist’s farewell to Houston Community College, where he has served on the art faculty for 30 years, and the exhibit includes 30 pieces, one for every year spent in the studios at the college’s Midtown campus. Though the show marks the end of the teacher’s career, the painter’s career moves on with undeniable momentum. When this show closes, House will start preparations for a major solo exhibit at Houston’s Art Car Museum in May, 2012.

GlassTire’s Bill Davenport described House’s often contrarian career, writing in 2009, “He’s an interesting anomaly: his paintings straddled gestural abstraction and cornball figuration years ago when abstract painting was a religion, making House a heretic. Today, House’s abstract illusionism is still disreputable, but embraced by younger artists precisely for that iconoclastic edge.”

One element that has remained consistent over the years is the painterly quality of his work and a technique that renders the opacity of acrylic paint as transparent as oil glazes. The Houston Chronicle’s critic Patricia Johnson summed it up in her review of his exhibit at DiverseWorks in 2000: “…whatever else these paintings are about, first and foremost they are about painting – the act of it, the intellectual exercise and emotional value of it. The inherent sensuality in slapping paint down and pushing, dragging, and scraping it across the surface …..is what first brings the viewer to the work and proclaims the artists presence – and, in this exhibit, his power.”

Perry House: Movin’ On will be in HCC Central’s Art Gallery August 31 through September 30. Please join us for a reception on Wednesday, September 7, from 5:00PM to 7:00PM.
