Do you wanna inspire the next generation of amazing youth artists in San Antonio?
Do you wanna make your artistic mark on our beautiful city?
Do you have a voice that needs to be heard? A talent that begs to be shared?!
Well do ya?!!!!
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the time to get involved is NOW!
Let us start off by introducing ourselves.
Hi! We’re San Anto Cultural Arts. You may have seen us on the news recently or read about one of our current projects in the local paper. Perhaps you’ve picked up a copy of our own community newspaper, El Placazo. Maybe you’ve driven past one of the 45 murals we have created throughout San Antonio. You may have even seen our enormous Paleta bicycle rack. Sure, there are lots of ways that you could have heard about us, but we understand if you haven’t. So let’s clear things up. San Anto Cultural Arts is an arts organization located on the west side of San Antonio. We’ve been around for 20 years creating public art and preserving culture in San Antonio. Our mission is to foster human and community development through community based arts. We achieve this mission through our Community Mural/Public Art Program and our El Placazo Community Newspaper Program.
So how can a talented artist like you become involved? We’re glad you asked!
San Anto Cultural Arts is searching for ten dynamic artists to participate in our first annual, artist series, Mini Mural Project.
The Mini Mural Project is designed to familiarize the public with San Anto Cultural Arts, engage the San Antonio community with our mural-making process, provide teaching tools for our youth participants and showcase the talent and creativity of the artists we work with.
So how does it work?
Artists may submit up to 5 jpg images of original work. Images must be labeled with your last name, first name, title of artwork and size (ie. Doe\_John\_Title\_24x30.jpg). Please make sure your images are clear, in focus and well lit. Email images, along with your contact information and CV or resume (if you have one) to firstname.lastname@example.org
Keep in mind, it is not necessary for you to have mural painting experience, however we would like to see images that will give us a good idea of your artistic style and skill level.
10 local artists will be chosen to participate in our first series. Those chosen will become official San Anto Muralists and will carry on our 20-year legacy of muralismo and public art in San Antonio.
If chosen San Anto will provide you with materials and a $350 stipend. In return you will be asked to work with our youth participants to complete your mural, which can be done several ways. You can either work with students in our after school program or schedule weekend painting workshops at San Anto Headquarters. If you have your own studio we can even schedule some time for participants to come help you there. Our hope is that our participants will be there to help you design and create your mini mural. It gives the artist an extra set of hands and provides our participants with the experience of working with talented artists. Because part of the project involves working with our participants we ask that artists who apply live in San Antonio.
That sounds great, but what is a mini mural?
Mini murals are roughly 10’x10’ images painted in acrylic paint on Polytab fabric utilizing the “Parachute Mural Technique.” This process allows us to paint our murals in a safe, climate controlled, studio environment. Once completed the mini murals can then be transferred to the wall and installed using an acrylic adhesive.
Don’t worry about all this technical talk. We’ll teach you how to do this through a series of workshops. It’s really not a difficult process to learn.
As for the design? Mini murals should be colorful and vibrant and don’t necessarily have to be confined to a square. Because of their size and versatility, artists can be creative in the composition and placement of these murals.
The murals created through this project will become a part of San Anto’s official mural inventory. They will be placed on a public wall for all to enjoy. San Anto has a commitment to our murals. We do not simply create new public artworks. We also maintain them. Our oldest mural is 20 years old and it looks just as fresh and vibrant today as it did the day we unveiled it. Rest assured, San Anto will make the same commitment to the works created through the Mini Mural Project. We will ensure that these works of art will be preserved for generations to come.
