Call for Artists - CSA-San Antonio
Arts Mall Productions is now accepting applications for its Inaugural Community Supported Art (CSA-San Antonio) Program. The CSA-San Antonio Program directly supports the production of new art by local artists.
WHAT IS CSA?
CSA-San Antonio is a subscription service for locally produced art. Similar to the boxes of fruit and vegetables that one might get from a local farm as an agricultural CSA, CSA-San Antonio will offer “shares” of art to feed the public’s cultural appetite. Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy seasonal food directly from nearby farms. With the same buy-local spirit in mind, Community Supported Art is a similar endeavor to support local art and artists, and to help sustain a healthy arts environment in San Antonio. Arts Mall is currently accepting applications from San Antonio-based artists who are interested in participating.
Our local CSA Program is modeled on the Community Supported Art project created by Springboard for the Arts and mnartists.org in Minnesota.
Nine local artists will be chosen to create 50 pieces for the inaugural CSA season. Each share may consist of works across several disciplines, potentially including painting, printing, sculpture, textile, ceramics, music, lighting, collage and books. Each artist will receive a stipend of $1000, which is intended to assist with the production costs of the pieces. In addition, the format of the program is designed to provide opportunities for artists to engage and connect with local collectors who purchase CSA shares. Additionally, workshops will be held to assist artists with the application process and learning more about treating their art like a real business endeavor. Workshops will take place July 13 & 15 at Geekdom in downtown San Antonio.
Interested consumers/collectors who purchase a share (aka a “subscription”) will receive a total of nine original works, one from each participating artist. The shares will be delivered through three pick-up events that will take place from October through early December. Each pick-up party will take place at a different community venue, and will provide an opportunity for artists and collectors to meet.

WHO SHOULD APPLY:
CSA-San Antonio is open to local San Antonio/Bexar County, professional artists in all disciplines. The 50 pieces produced for CSA-San Antonio may be 50 unique items, a series of prints or editions, or depending on your medium, a unique artistic experience created just for our 50 shareholders.
A few things to keep in mind:
• While not everyone works small, think about how you could fit what you do into a 12" x 18" x 12" box. If you usually make giant paintings, think about how you could get a sample of your work into a collector's hands.
• Not everyone is a maker of objects. For artists working in performance, film, sound, installation, etc., think about how you can format what you do into a commissioned object for collectors. Musicians might opt for a limited edition recording, or filmmakers a uniquely packaged DVD. If your work is ephemeral, think about how to get it to your audience and vice versa.
• Keep in mind that this is a commission for unique artworks. We may love what you are already making, but the stipend is not intended for the purchase of 50 commercial products, nor is it intended to help you clear out the work that is currently taking up storage space in your garage or attic.
• Also note that participating artists will need to consider the delivery of their shares. If your objects are fragile, know that you may need to wrap/box/pad the individual shares to protect them.
