Frank X Tolbert2 was born in Washington DC in 1945. He is a master drafter who lives and works in Houston, Texas, and shows extensively throughout Texas. He recently showed at Kirk Hopper Fine Art in Dallas, Texas in 2011 and in 2010 he was part of Me, My, Self, Eye, curated by Barry Walker at the MFAH.
Additionally, his work has been collected at numerous museums, including the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art of The University of Texas at Austin, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art, the San Antonio Museum of Art, the Witte Museum of San Antonio, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
Tolbert's work is highly narrative. His has created a visual language all his own through the recurrent use of certain images such as fish, flora, and cowboys. His work is often interlaced with ambiguity and humor. Joan Davidow wrote of Tolbert in his essay "Texas Figurative Drawings", "Tolbert has a frenzied, uninhibited style that communicates personal revelations."
