ALTERNATIVES: Borders and Boundaries

Borders and Boundaries seeks entries of photographic media that examines literal and figurative delineations of space and the control of the movement of bodies through space. The exhibition seeks to represent a range of practice, including still and moving imagery, to broadly address concerns about identity, social/political experience, territory, and landscape. The exhibition will feature a diverse representation of national and international artists working in photographic arts and a catalog will be published.

Borders and Boundaries will be a presentation of Alternatives, a biennial juried exhibition organized by Ohio University’s MFA Photography and Integrated Media program in the School of Art. Since its beginning in 1980, Alternatives has achieved national recognition for its leadership in forging new definitions in the medium by emphasizing the work of photographers in the conceptual forefront of the practice.

In conjunction with the exhibition a lecture will be given by juror Jason Reed. Jason Reed is currently an Assistant Professor of Photography at Texas State University. He holds an MFA in Photography from Illinois State University and BA in Geography from the University of Texas-Austin. Through photography, video and social art collaborations, his work explores the cultural landscape of the places he has called home. In particular, he is interested in how people create space for themselves, mark the land, and construct identity in the space and places they inhabit. His work has been shown in such place as the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, St. Edwards University in Austin, UTSA Satellite Space in San Antonio and La Asamblea Legislativa del Distrito Federal in Mexico City. Jason is also the director and co-founder of Borderland Collective, a social art project, and a part of Lakes Were Rivers, a group of artists working in photography and video who work individually and collectively as well as publish limited edition books.
