Speaking at a General Electric plant in Wisconsin today, President Obama encouraged young people to consider training programs for skilled manufacturing work. “I promise you, folks can make a lot more, potentially, with skilled manufacturing or the trades than they might with an art-history degree,” The president immediately added: “Now, nothing wrong with an art-history degree—I love art history—I don’t want to get a bunch e-mails from everybody.”

This comment was reported by a number of newspapers, including the Washington Post and the National Review, whose headlines referred to the President alienating his “base.”

Not surprised. What is missing in this statement from the State of the Union address:

“Five years ago we set out to change the odds for all our kids. We worked with lenders to reform student loans, and today more young people are earning college degrees than ever before. Race to the Top, with the help of governors from both parties, has helped states raise expectations and performance. Teachers and principals in schools from Tennessee to Washington, D.C., are making big strides in preparing students with the skills for the new economy — problem solving, critical thinking, science, technology, engineering, math.”
