Cadillac Ranch: Another Marsh Victim?

by Bill Davenport February 7, 2013

cadillac ranchCadillac Ranch, the iconic panhandle art installation sponsored by eccentric art patron and accused sex offender Stanley Marsh 3, may be in danger of the bulldozer, according to Anthony G. Buzbee, a Houston lawyer representing alleged victims of Marsh’s alleged misdeeds: “When people find out what this man is really like, they’ll want to come out and help me bulldoze the place. We do not need a monument that honors an alleged child predator.”

Bill, I realize the remarks are those of a lawyer with an axe to grind, but the work is by Ant Farm. Stanley Marsh is just the owner. The right of preservation belongs to Ant Farm. As one can see, the state of the Cadillacs is pretty dreadful.

Buzbee says he knows what Stanley is “really like”, but then calls him an “alleged child predator”.

Kinda stupid, if you ask me. Leave the fuckin’ Cadillacs out of this.

The art is it’s own content. The work is by Ant Farm as Andy points out. How many financial crooks donate to museum collections? Because the land owner is sub human how does that pervert the art? Rust in peace Cadillac Ranch.

Sometimes a Cadillac is just a Cadillac. Leave the Art out of the equation you alleged “voice of the people” who’s silence you’ve mistaken for consent.

I was there recently, for the first time actually. Not once did Stanley Marsh cross my mind. What I was thinking about was how fun and interesting this place really was and why I hadn’t gone there sooner. It was the best 30 minute time span I have had in a long long time. Worth a visit. Worth leaving it as is… a constantly evolving interactive piece of art.

Most of the people that come to see the Cadillac Ranch, some from around the world, know nothing of Marsh. These cars attract people to the panhandle and generate money for the city/area. These cars are also an icon of West Texas. I know that doesn’t mean much to a big city lawyer. They still mean a lot, to folks that grew up in the panhandle.

“When people find out what this man is really like, they’ll want to come out and help me bulldoze the place…” First off, being from the Amarillo area, most of us had our suspicions and rumors about the man already. The Cadillac Ranch is an iconic art installation. People don’t always know the wheres or what of Amarillo, but the Cadillac Ranch is something a lot of people recognize and to tear down any art because of the man behind the money is ignorant.

It is a public work of art, owned as much by all the people who paint it and visit it each year as by Mr. Marsh. And that was Marsh’s very point in not putting up fences, video surveillance, etc. Art censorship is a dangerous game…
