Michael Peranteau New Art League Houston Director: Lightning Appointment Follows Weiss’ Lightning Departure

by Bill Davenport June 4, 2012

The Houston Art League, the city’s oldest arts organization, has moved swiftly to appoint Micheal Peranteau, one of the city’s most experienced arts organizers, as their new Executive Director. Former Executive Director Glenn Weiss resigned the post in February after only three months on the job, leaving many scratching their heads, not least the again-rudderless Art League.

Peranteau began his career in the arts at the Center for Art & Performance, a gallery that he co-founded with artist Max Pruneda in 1980. In 1983 he joined DiverseWorks Art Space where he helped establish an artist residency program and a nationally-recognized performance space.  He worked at DiverseWorks for twelve years and from 1992-94 served as the Executive Director. In 1993-94 he worked with Rick Lowe and other artists to establish Project Row Houses.

In 2000, Peranteau founded Artist Projects Inc, a non-profit organization that consulted with small, new arts organizations and his clients included Nameless Sound, Voices Breaking Boundaries, and The Hill of James Magee in El Paso, among many others. From 2003-06 he was Interim Executive Director of Project Row Houses and from 2009-12 he served as Development Director.
