SXSW Buzz Tsunami Dampens Other Arts

by Bill Davenport March 4, 2012

South by Southwest is coming to Austin, and visual and dramatic arts groups are hunkering down to weather the tsunami of visitors almost exclusively focused on music, film and technology. Jeanne Clair Van Ryzin reports in Austin 360 that the Zach Theater and Ballet are purposely between shows, as is AMOA/Arthouse’s stylish Congress Ave. facility, which has been rented out in its entirety to SamsungMobileUS for #FEED, a “a 10 day SXSW experience that pairs the hottest social media companies with digi-artists and live music,” avoiding the messy rent-out-the-current-installation controversy that plagued the  space last year.

Hi, Bill!
While it’s true that a few of our staple arts institutions might pimp out their spaces for events, please reconsider the idea that artists are dropping out to take shelter.
SXSW invites all manner of inventive, wild-ride, cross-discipline art participation opportunities. The list of galleries, alternative spaces & venues hosting art events is extensive, and the melding of film, music & other arts is a natural occurance during mid-March.
Check out Domy Books http://www.domybooks.com/austin as one tasty example of how fusing with–as well as fueling– SouthBy gets done.
Hiphop, it don’t stop. We fear no festival.
