The New Galveston Artist Residency will opens its studio doors on Saturday, January 28 for of tours of the sparkling new seaside (well, bayside, anyway) facility, and the works of its first crop of residents: ex-CORE Fellow, conceptual sculptor Nick Barbee, NY interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker Nsenga Knight, and animator and filmmaker Kelly Sears.
Located in a pair of elaborately repurposed industrial buildings at 2521 Mechanic St., near the cruise ship terminal on Galverston’s bay side, the new program is open (by nomination only) to artists in any discipline, with special focus on artists whose work is not only good, but good for you, involving sustainable living, community involvement, and social awareness. The opening party is from 4-9 p.m. with food from Eatsie Boys, Little Miss Cupcake, and Eatcetera, a 7:30 performance by Indian Jewelry, art by the aforementioned residents, with works by last summer’s resident Colin Hunt thrown in for good measure.
