Austin Merger Mania Strikes Houston Nonprofits: Fresh Arts and Spacetaker Rumored to Tie the Knot

by Bill Davenport November 10, 2011

This just in: Houston non-profits Fresh Arts Coalition and Spacetaker are reportedly “in talks” to merge.

The Glasstire mission statement match-maker shows that the new couple have many shared interests, with enough variety for spice. Both nonprofits do arts marketing, Fresh Arts focusing more on performing arts orgs, Spacetaker on individual artists:

“Fresh Arts Coalition is a collaborative of small and mid-sized Houston arts organizations that markets the importance of the arts to the public and builds audience participation through increased visibility, collaborative efforts and advocacy.”

“Spacetaker is a 501(c)3 professional organization and Artist Resource Center located in Houston’s First Ward whose mission is to provide artists and non-profits access to economic development, continuing education, and networking opportunities to support their professional growth.”

This merging thing is getting hip. I think Houston’s institutions need to start testing the waters lest they be thought of as losers by all the cool 501(c)(3)s. Here are a few suggestions:

Project Row Houses and the TFAA
The Station Museum and the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts
Skydive and the Junior League of Houston
The Great God Pan Is Dead and The Greensheet
MFAH and Chevron
