Margarita-Fueled Partying Vies With Minimalist Introspection at 25th Chinati Weekend in Marfa

by Bill Davenport October 3, 2011

sublime in the daytime . . .

Gas up the car and  pick up some lip balm, it’s Open House weekend at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa. This year, their 25th anniversary, is marked by two special exhibtions: a series of glass pagodas from noted photographer of nothingness Hiroshi Sugimoto and sculptures by Jean Arp, noted sculptor of things that might be anything.

Sugimoto will be in Marfa for a reception before the $500-a-plate benefit dinner, just two of the events put on by Chinati and the Judd Foundation, which, like every other space in Marfa, will all be hosting openings simultanously as the little town comes to life for a couple of days of international glamour.

In recent years, cactus margaritas, outdoor stages and pop-up gallerys have come to characterize what was once a ritual homage to the deceased minimalist’s legacy. Like the 4th Annual Trans-Pecos Festival of Music and Love at El Cosmico, a retro-groovy trailer park/music ‘n’ arts venue (with wood fired Dutch hot tubs!).

“It’s a good party,” said artist Julie Speed, whose show is opening at her studio at 124 El Paso,  kitty corner from Food Shark, a popular truck that feeds the overflowing masses.

The show’s not at Galleri Urbane this year. It’s at my old studio at 124 El Paso – kitty corner from the Food Shark, just down from Arber and Son.
