Poignant evidence of SA's disproportionate number of vets and casualties of the U.S.'s foreign wars. A high school on SA's West side, Sidney Lanier, reportedly suffered more Vietnam casualties among its graduates than any other in the nation. This photo was taken near July 4, note rosary tribute.

Día de los Muertos is the real, personal, Catholic-but-Mesoamerican thing here. This altar one was outside a retirement home on the largely-Latino West Side. Note completely non-ironic, non-skatepunk/piratical use of skull motif. It's a beautiful time to be in San Antonio, especially if the tradition resonates with you. You can bring a photo of a loved one and place it on the public altar in Main Plaza or elsewhere, too. This abuelito was a Spurs fan, like any good San Antonian. Note traditional color scheme; marigolds (and marigold orange) are a pre-Colombian visual tradition denoting mortality and the afterlife (in India, too, interestingly enough)
