Samuel Gompers died here in 1924 after suffering a heart attack in Mexico City; he was sped over to American soil on a commissioned train. So his affair with SA was brief, but fatal. More tragic, perhaps, is this bizarre, bobble-headed, verging-on-creepy, can't-tell-if-they're-going-for "rough-hewn" surface-or-if-it-maybe-melted-a-little-or-something public art installation. Look at his head! LOOK AT IT! Also, the crowd seems a trifle zombie-ish. Día de los Muertos is the real, personal, Catholic-but-Mesoamerican thing here. This altar one was outside a retirement home on the largely-Latino West Side. Note completely non-ironic, non-skatepunk/piratical use of skull motif. It's a beautiful time to be in San Antonio, especially if the tradition resonates with you. You can bring a photo of a loved one and place it on the public altar in Main Plaza or elsewhere, too.
