This is some of my fave public art in SA; Gary Sweeney's series of signs welcoming tourists with gaily designed jokes and implausibilities (one of them features SATX as a "winter wonderland.") Gary is a professional baggage handler, go check his vimeo for "A Short Video About Time." (photo by Justin Parr) I like this jaunty man by William Easley. He often facilitates tourist vacation photos with somebody, usually a teenage boy, being shot in the head. As for the statue's inspiration, José Toribio Losoya (1808–1836) was an SA native who fought alongside Crockett, Travis, Bowie et. al. at the Alamo. So it wasn't just white guys vs brown guys (but mostly).
