Me, Myself and Art

by Margaret Meehan July 29, 2011

I have to admit it’s been a hard year. Since last July Art and I have had a rocky relationship. After 2 decades of unconditional love I began to question our commitment to each other. While my friends grew up and got good jobs, bought houses, had children… I worked for pennies, racked up debt, and lived a nomadic life all for the love of “Art”. Don’t get me wrong, it felt right most of the time. And while those moments are less these days, when they do arrive they are stronger than ever, reminding me that we have a solid foundation. It is in these moments that I see that glimmer in Art’s eyes and the passion that keeps us together.  And despite learning the true definition of the words REALITY, NAIVETE´ and COMPROMISE  that can only come with life experience, especially when choosing a life that pushes against the norm, I know that we belong together and honestly couldn’t see myself with anyone else. Because even at our lowest points we have each other. We support each other and we are at our best when we give as good as we get.

So whenever I doubt our love, I revisit Art’s finest moments and remember why my partner Art is so special and still very much needed in this world.

Five top reasons this week, despite Art’s 2am booty calls, his raiding my fridge and refusing to pay the rent:

1. Patti Smith’s Just Kids.

Listen to the Free Library of Philadelphia’s podcast of her December 2010 reading from the memoir about her life and friendship with Robert Mapplethorpe. It made me want to be idealistic again. It made me want to be Patti Smith.

2. Gregg Bordowitz, “I still believe that art can change the world.”

“I’m here to present
some of my beliefs,” Gregg Bordowitz said as he began his performance-talk Testing Some Beliefs at Murray Guy gallery last Thursday evening. “Some of these beliefs will be familiar to you, since they are common beliefs, and one of the things I’m testing is whether we actually still share them.”  READ MORE about the performance on Artforum.com.

3. Hennessy Youngman aka the Pharaoh Henessey, need I say more?

4. Lucian Freud 1922-2011.

5. Gay Marriage in NY.

While this isn’t necessarily about Art, it is about love, commitment and patience. See more joy here.

FYI Hennessy’s “cousin” Jayson Musson will be lecturing at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth on October 4th. I’d get there early…
