Chinati Weekend

The Chinati Foundation holds its annual October open house weekend this Thursday through Sunday. You can read all about the museum-sponsored events on the foundation’s website, but it’s way harder to track down information on all the other things going on in Marfa. 

For this post I’ve tried to piece together listings of all the non-Chinati-related events this weekend. To accomplish this goal, I checked a variety of sources, including fliers at the grocery store and the coffee shop, Marfalist.org, and just plain asking around. (Word-of-mouth definitely remains the default way of promoting events in Marfa.) If I missed anything, please feel free to leave a comment with the details. 

Thursday

 

Fancy Pony Land hosts a trunk show of jewelry by Hot Mom Cop on Thursday, Oct. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. Hot Mom Cop is a line of jewelry by Alex Schmidt made out of stones and bones collected in and around Marfa. Fancy Pony Land is at 203 E. San Antonio St. and will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. 

Austin-based musician Dale Watson plays at Padre’s at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8. Padre’s is at 209 W. El Paso St. Cover is $7. 

Friday

The Gourds, a band from Austin, play at Padre’s at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. Padre’s is at 209 W. El Paso St. Cover is $12.

 

Etherington Fine Art will celebrate its one-year anniversary in Marfa will a reception Friday, Oct. 8 from 9 to 11 p.m. The exhibition features new work by John Gibson, Nathan Wilson, Susan Schwalb, Peri Schwartz and Clifford Smith. Etherington Fine Art is at 120 N. Highland Ave.

There will be a reception for a group exhibition at Eugene Binder Gallery Friday, Oct. 8 from 9 to 11 p.m. featuring work by Hillary Holsonback, Nicholas Knight, Brent Ozaeta, Johan Pomara, Robert Terry, Katherine Alexander and Eugenio Basvaldo. Eugene Binder Gallery is at 218 N. Highland Ave. 

 

The Ghost Flower & Other Tales of Enchantment, an exhibition by Ann Marie Nafziger, opens 9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8 at the Do Right Hall. The exhibition remains open from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 and noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10. To find the Do Right Hall, look for the giant orange horseshoe on Dallas St. between Austin St. and Highland Ave. You really can’t miss it.

The folks from the Food Shark will open the Museum of Electronic Wonders and Grilled Cheese Parlour at 300 W. San Antonio St. from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8 and Saturday Oct. 9.  

Saturday

The Judd Foundation is offering free tours of La Mansana de Chinati/The Block on the hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9. Tours are usually $20, so this is a great deal. The entrance to The Block is located near the corner of Kelly and El Paso Streets. 

Galleri Urbane will host a reception for exhibiting artists Kate Carr and Claire Oswalt from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9. The gallery is at 212 E. San Antonio St. and is open 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8 and Saturday, Oct. 9.   

 

Marfa-based painters Julie Speed and Leslie Wilkes will exhibit new work at 124 El Paso Street. The reception is 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, and the exhibition will be open for viewing from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8 and Saturday, Oct. 9. 

Jon Langford and the Far Forlorn and Deano Waco play at Padre’s. Padre’s is at 209 W. El Paso St. 

The Museum of Electronic Wonders and Grilled Cheese Parlour will be open again at 300 W. San Antonio St. from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.  

Sunday

 

The Holy Mother of Bathsheets, also known as Alyce Santoro, will be making an appearance to bless clotheslines outside of Fancy Pony Land at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10. This is in celebration of the Big Bend “Nowhere Dryer” Clothesline Appreciation Day. Fancy Pony Land is at 203 E. San Antonio St.

Luis Nieto Dickens will host a reception for his exhibition Dirt/Gold at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10. The exhibition be on display in the basement of the Masonic Lodge at the corner of Highland Ave. and Texas St. from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8 through Sunday, Oct. 10.

UPDATE

Here are some other events I just heard about:

-There will be a show by local artists on the main floor of the Masonic Lodge at the corner of Highland Ave. and Texas St. over the weekend.

-The Marfa Book Company hosts an opening for an exhibition of works by Ian Hamilton Finlay on Thursday, Oct. 7 at 9 p.m. The Book Company is at 105 S. Highland Ave. 

-Jake Silverstein, editor of Texas Monthly, will read from Nothing Happened at Then it Did at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 at the Marfa Book Company at 105 S. Highland Ave.

-There will be a pop-up shop at the Capri (across from the Thunderbird on San Antonio St.) on Friday, Oct. 8 from 4 to 6 p.m.
