The local angle

Farrah Fawcett, sex symbol and actress who died yesterday of cancer at age 62, was an art major at UT, Austin and continued sculpting throughout her life: a collaboration with Keith Edmier in which the two artist made life-sized nude statues of each other showed in 2000 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Andy Warhol Foundation. A brief internet search reveals no evidence that Michael Jackson, pop mega-star, who died yesterday in Los Angeles, was either from Texas, or a visual artist, although he owned a lot of art.

So pop culture isn’t my best trivial pursuit category: I’ve been informed by semi-reliable sources that Michael Jackson did indeed make drawings, and that in addition to the relatively tame sculptures, Farrah Fawcett made notorious nipple and body paintings. Fawcett slathered herself in paint and dragged herself across the canvas, rather than letting some icky surrealist guy do it for her. Now that’s progress!
