The Menil Goes Big

by Roy Neinast January 30, 2009

The good folks at Swamplot have tracked down what the new and improved Menil Collection might look like.

“David Chipperfield’s proposal for the museum includes the addition of galleries, a drawing institute, an auditorium, café, bookshop and archives,” according to these people.

I feel like I should bemoan the lack of bungalows in the drawing. Seems to be the thing to do. But I’ve got to admit I’m just psyched about the expansion of one of my favorite places in town.

Of course, once it’s done I’m sure I’ll miss the intimacy of the old place.

Visions of the Brochstein pavilion at Rice (which I love) dancing in my head. Hopefully the Menil will hang on to more of its green space than Rice has.

The Kimbell is giving its green space away and expects everyone to cheer. We’re going to lose one of …if not ‘the ‘most important green space in this sorry town. The will of the influential, moneyed few is almost always flawed and yet never questioned.
