Fight H8 Across America
Houston – City Hall – November 15th 12:30pm

This is going to be Big!
November 14th, 2008
Wow. I am really impressed.

Check out this post from the Houston Protest Facebook group:

Hello all. First of all, I am so thankful for the overwhelming support and attention this event has gotten. We now have almost 500 confirmed attendees, and another 500 or so who might be coming, and that is just on the Facebook Invite.

So, thanks to all of your for helping to get the word out!

The event will be held in Hermann Square, adjacent to City Hall. Remember that this is a nationwide event, so as we are gathering here in Houston, others will be doing the same in every state across the nation, allowing us to truly speak with one voice.

The event begins at 12:30, but we are asking that you try to arrive around noon so we can be ready to start on time. We have lined up some very exciting speakers, and this is shaping up to be quite a grand event. So, I look forward to seeing everyone out tomorrow! It is supposed to be chilly, so bring a jacket.

Our speakers include married couples personally affected by these measures, local politicians, local community organizers, etc. It should be really fun.

Scroll down for maps and ideas for parking. On-street is always an option but that will fill up fast. I recommend using the underground garages.

If you need any questions answered or have any suggestions/ideas, send me an e-mail at fighth8@airexposure.com – See you tomorrow!

Signs, Posters, & Updated Event Information
November 14th, 2008
Okay. So, we’re all set. It looks like the green light has been given for our protest/rally in Hermann Square at the base of the steps to Houston City Hall. It’s actually a great location for a protest. As the legend goes, George Hermann bequeathed this land to the City of Houston for several defined purposes – one of which was to have an area for the citizens to assemble. As such, we’re meeting with the city tomorrow to discuss the spirit and intent of Mr. Hermann’s will and what impact that will have on our permit fees.

I have sign making materials! If you would like to attend a sign making party, there are several, in Houston starting tomorrow (Nov. 14) at 5pm. For details please e-mail me at fighth8@airexposure.com – please include your phone number and how many people will be with you.

By the way, here’s a new site for sign ideas:
Downloadable Protest Signs

We need a stage setup! Something to be put up on the steps to City Hall. A backdrop, podium, and heavy duty extension cords. If you know someone who can lend these to us or rent them, please let me know ASAP: fighth8@airexposure.com

Let’s make this a huge event! Tell everyone you know. Bring friends. Even if you come alone, you’ll be among friends, but if you can bring a group it will make our impact more effective. Scroll down this page for all the information you need. If we’re missing something, comment on this post.

Thanks!

Donation button back up…
November 13th, 2008
As this event comes together we’re realizing there are still a few expenses left. For example, we will need off-duty police officers present per city rules. Also, we need help paying for some of the setups, stage material, signs, posters, and possibly an audio system rental. For this reason, and due to popular demand, I am reinstating the PayPal Donation button. Any financial assistance you can offer will be appreciated – even just a dollar.

Thanks!
Josh

A note about dogs & signs:

We’re recommending everyone keep their 4-legged friends at home. We’re not sure how large the crowd is going to get, but it may be very crowded.

Signs: If you use a wood stake for a sign handle it must be less than 2 inches wide. If the sticks are round, they can be no larger than 3/4 inch in diameter.

I would like to briefly describe the mission of this event. This is not meant to be an angry protest.

There are really two objectives:

1. Show our support of GLBT friends & family in California affected by Proposition 8.

and
2. Make our voice heard that we will only accept complete equality. Anti-gay legislation like Prop 8, Amendment 2, Prop 102, and the like are damaging and wrong. We are not second class citizens.

It’s all about visibility.

Make us proud!
