August doldrums

by Charles Dee Mitchell August 22, 2007

The dog days of August are here.

Galleries
are either on vacation or operating with reduced hours. Gerald Peters
has announced a delay to their move to the Design District, pushing
their September date till November. Their opening exhibition at the new
space will be Dale Chihuly. I wonder if that work has taken some
exciting new direction?

Looking for signs of life,
the most promising things to come to mind are renovation projects are
two area venues. Both Dunn and Brown Contemporary and Barry Whistler
Gallery are going through pretty massive interior overhauls. And the
migration to the design district continues. Pan American Projects has a
sign up on their window on Dragon Street. A new venue called Light and
Sie Gallery is promising a September opening on Leslie Street, just
west of Industrial Blv.

The bright spot for this week is the 6th Annual Dallas Asian Film Festival,
which kicks off with a VIP party at Nobu on Wednesday and runs Aug 23 –
30 at the Magnolia Theater. Always worth checking out and come prepared
to stay up late. Those Asians believe in the two hour film, and many
things start after 9pm, and the cool horror movies are at midnight.
