Donald Vogel, 1917-2004

by Rainey Knudson February 18, 2004

Dallas artist and gallerist Donald Vogel died this past Tuesday, February 17. The cause was heart failure, according to the artist’s son Kevin Vogel, who runs the family’s Valley House Gallery in North Dallas with his wife, Cheryl. The elder Vogel, a Milwaukee native, arrived in Dallas in 1942 with a Chicago art training and a desire to promote (some might say introduce) modernist art to the city. A true pioneer, his influence continues to be felt in the city’s institutions.

Dear Valley House Gallery, I am in position of a Charles Umlauf statue. It was given to my late mother-in-law, Pauline Muth by Mr Umlauf. She was a local Dallas artist and friend’s with Donald Vogel. I have art done by Donald Vogel. I am interested in selling the statue or just verifying, however there is no markings indicating that it is indeed an Umlauf.
